What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels use a special chemical solution to remove the surface layers of your skin. The depth of your peel depends on the conditions you’re treating. There are light, medium, and deep chemical peels. Dermatology and Aesthetics Center of Utah specializes in medium-depth peels.

Medium chemical peels remove the epidermis and part of the middle layer of skin (dermis). This type of peel is effective at treating deeper wrinkles, brown spots, and acne scars.

As your skin peels away, the fresh skin beneath shows through, evening out your skin tone, and improving the overall appearance of your complexion. Wrinkles, lines, and acne scars are less noticeable, and your skin is smoother and firmer.

What happens during a chemical peel?

Before your chemical peel, the team at Dermatology and Aesthetics Center of Utah examines your skin to determine that a chemical peel is what you need to address skin issues.

When they apply the chemical agent to your skin during a peel, you might feel a mild stinging or burning sensation. The team can apply cool compresses to soothe your skin.

How do I take care of my skin after chemical peels?

When your peel is complete, you likely experience side effects like:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Dryness
  • Irritation

Your provider can recommend an ointment for your skin to protect it while it heals. You might need to use ice packs to reduce discomfort.

Generally, a peel can leave you with 3-5 days of skin that is pink or shows redness and flaking. It can take seven days or more for your skin to heal fully from a medium peel. In some cases, your provider may recommend a series of peels to achieve optimal results.

The Dermatology and Aesthetics Center of Utah team continues to monitor your healing progress after a chemical peel during follow-up appointments. Because your skin is drier and more sensitive, they can recommend high-quality cleansers, lotions, and sunscreens to protect the healthy, new skin growth.
